Diaper Bag "Do"

This is for all the mommies, daddies and preggers fashionistas who would rather be carrying a backpack to stash all the baby essentials then don on vinyl diaper bag covered in cartoon characters. Painful on the eyes and completely unnecessary. Being fashionable and pregnant has never been so "IN" like now....so banish your overall short-alls and juvenile diaper bags to the fashion graveyard.

Check out Coach's line...$398. I don't know about you all but its been a love/hate relationship for me with their designs ...but do still love their classic totes and this can be carries long after your baby has outgrown his/her "pull-ups".

Let's not forget about Papa and his wish to NOT carry a man-purse or your purse for that matter. He can carry these with no-shame, keep his masculinity intact, and navigate fatherhood better than his Garmin GPS system. $110 and it comes in the manly colors or navy, grey, black, camoflauge.

If you want the Angelina lips & style but can only afford one of them, check out Storksak "Gigi" tote. $198 at www.blissliving.com

or windowshop your weight off by strapping Heidi Klum's choice- Nest "Whipstitch" on the back of your stroller. $265 at www.blissliving.com

Wellies

Does anyone else share the same strange obsession I have with Wellington boots? I see them pop up during the winter and spring here and sometimes on kids enroute to school but since I live in LaLa land, our weather forecast rarely deviates from "sunny & mild" or "sunny & warm" my opportunity to wear them is about 3.2 days from March-April. I get jealous of those of you who experience seasons.

Fashion history lesson 101:

The Wellington boot, also known as a wellie, a topboot, a gumboot, or a rubber boot, is a type of boot based upon Hessian boots. It was worn and popularised by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and fashionable among the British aristocracy in the early 19th century. The first Duke of Wellington instructed his shoemaker, Hoby of St. James' Street, London, to modify the 18th century Hessian boot. The resulting new boot designed in soft calfskin leather had the trim removed and was cut more closely around the leg. The heels were low cut, stacked around an inch, and the boot stopped at mid-calf. It was hard wearing for battle yet comfortable for the evening. The Iron Duke didn't know what he'd started—the boot was dubbed the Wellington and the name has stuck ever since.

Jeans Warehouse sale- Pasadena

I need another pair of jeans like I need another hole in my head, but since when did this ever stop me?

A few weeks ago, I went with my girls to snap up some pair of jeans since I had a few inches of space left in my closet, so if you have some time and space (or your fav jeans have holes in all the wrong places....):
Jeans are 5 for $250 on Friday, 6 for $250 Saturday, and 10 for $250 on Sunday!
--- CLEARANCE SALE ---
www.thewarehousesale.com

300 E Green StreetPasadena, CA 91101
RSVP Now for FREE admission
$5 Admission without RSVP

Friday September 26, 2008
12:00 PM - 08:00 PM

Quick Tips:

  1. Wear a dress or skirt since there are no private dressing rooms...on that note, no holey underwear either.

  2. grab all the jeans you may or may not want (and in a size smaller & larger) before heading into the communal dressing rooms. I had to make 5 runs to try on 12 pairs, while "Miss G" made 2 and tried on 30 pairs.

  3. bring a honest friend for the "butt" check...even if you love the look & label, some jeans just make your tush as flat as a pancake

  4. avoid the muffin top or plumber's crack look. No sense in paying for jeans if they are not flattering.
  5. Now, to add a little flair to your denim...

I personally think this satchel is a bit much and only appropriate within the city of Las Vegas, but if you want to glam up your denim with some flash, http://www.botkier.com/ has this St. Tropez satchel on sale for $175 (marked down from $495). Black patent is on sale too!

On a recession budget and shopping locally around town? Check out this brown patent number from http://www.kooba.com/. Julee patent shopper tote is 45% off at $343.75.

Or if you are lunching with the ladies of leisure, this "Cent" printed silk clutch is perfect addition & on sale for 50% off for $447.50. Get it at http://www.jimmychoo.com/

The "Clutches Girl"

My theory on gift giving over the past few years is to give a thoughtful, beautiful item to my beloved friends that they would never buy for themselves. A small decadent token that doesn't have to be expensive but usually placed in the category, "I'd love to buy it but I'm not going to use it that often"...which leads me to the topic of clutches. I'm know as the "clutches" gift giver. All my friends know that inside that wrapped box by Nordstroms, will be a treasure they would never buy for themselves....since Miss T will gift one to them for their b-day.

Gift Giving Tip #1-
My secret, I buy these in multiples, different colors & sizes, and whenever I spot a great buy. I don't know if you've experienced this, but whenever I need to buy a birthday gift, I can never find the right clutch and get frustrated at the lack of choices. So if any of you end up w/ a gift certificate or non-clutch item, you will know your gift was a last-minute run. Some are bought full priced, some during the Nordstroms sales, a few at boutiques, and I'm continually hunting for these clutches everywhere I go. You can start your friends collection with black but I personally would go with an intense, rich color. I keep a stash of clutches in my linen closet, pre-wrapped & ready to go so I never have to worry about running to the store to buy a gift, especially if you are tight on time! My lot in life is that whenever I am pressed for time, I never find the right present.....so that being said, I have one gift remaining and I'm due for another run. (Yes, I did look for clutches during my last Dior Gladiator shoe binge and didn't see any clutch worth buying, c'est la vie!)
So, here are my favs.
http://www.nordstroms.com/
Sadie $108 (L) , Luxie $210 (M), Ruched $168

http://www.piperlime.com/
Nine West (L) $69 or Snowbird (R) $295

If you have a bank account that rivals Ivanka Trump, these are absolutely stunning (feel free to gift me any of these) Christian Louboutin (I love this man) $910 or get the Nancy Gonzalez (R) one for $1650 http://www.neimanmarcus.com/

You really can't go wrong with either one of these.
Laura Merkin - $180. http://www.bloomingdales.com/ for your classic friend that is more comfortable in tailored shift dresses with the heart of Charlotte from SATC.....or for that fashion forward friend who loves leather (don't we all?) Loeffler Randall- $349

.....and for your edgy, trend-setting galpal who can uses Gwen Stefani as her muse & inspiration, this Edinburgh Irvine clutch can be acquired through http://www.eluxury.com/ for $295.

Hobo International is my "go to guy". I can depend on them because they usually have a selection that will please the pickiest & selective of friends. http://www.hobointernational.com/. The "Sculpt" $198 comes in black, anthracite, & grey...and you can buy direct from them. Free shipping if you spend over $150. Go green, spend your gas money on latte instead.

Gift Giving -Tip #2
As you can see, clutch styles, like friends, clothes, and shoes can be schizophrenic, so go with a GOAL in mind. I tend to stay away from "season-typing" and won't buy a clutch made of straw (Kate Spade & Michael Kors makes beautiful ones, but these can only be given in spring/summer so if you decide to buy, make sure you know the person who you're gifting it to will love it). A good goal to have is choosing a color palate that can be carried over 2-3 seasons. White or winter white can be worn from December- September. Reds, garnets, ruby colored items are great for fall-winter. Jewel tones are great for winter-spring...maybe even in summer. More muted, rich colors like aubergine and peacock blues are more specific for fall. I tend to go for leather because satin & silks are tough to keep gorgeous, especially since a clutch can easily be ruined whenever drinks are spilled on them. Live it, Learn it.
**a side note, I've learned my lesson. Never wear your Louboutins, Choos, Manolos, etc when out drinking, enough said**
Now, the big question.....do you girls still want clutches for your birthday gifts? OR should I move to the next statement piece?
Gift Giving -Tip#3
Timeless & beautiful
(and budget friendly too!)
  1. 14k Gold Hoops (jewlery marts or ...Costco has 18k ones for under $140!)
  2. Pearl earrings (under $100 at Costco)
  3. Travel wallets (Nordtroms...see tip#1)
  4. monogrammed LL Bean tote
  5. photo in silver frame (I prefer candid photos)

Mulberry Ostrich Bayswater Bag

What do you all think of Mulberry's latest bag in Fuschia that is exclusively sold thru http://www.net-a-porter.com/? I know, I know- Do I really need another berry colored bag? At $3,995...I'd rather fork out a couple thousand more and get an Hermes Birkin. A few weeks ago enroute to SFO, I was envious of this 40s something woman next to be, swathed in a pashmina, dressed impeccably in tailored pants and matching sweater....AND a Birkin bag stashed on the floor next to her. Don't get me started on why one should never place her purse on anywhere but a chair, desk, or a lap. There is a old Mexican legend that spirits will emerge from the ground and steal your gold & fortunes (well, these days, ATM or your AMEX card) if you leave your purse on the ground. Well, that's a good enough reason for me and besides, do you want to dirty up bag? I was busy admiring her bag & asked her how long the wait list was....she told me it was a gift (bragging every so slightly but heck, I would be shouting to the world, check out this baby!)

There is an urban legend (to all my bag fashionistas, can any of you confirm if there is a wait list for a Birkin? I passed the Hermes store many times at South Coast Plaza & always see one in the window display) that there is a 1 year waiting list to get one. Check out this article: http://www.thestar.com/living/article/429020.

If you can't wait, http://www.portrero.com/ auctions authentic Birkin and other luxe goods. Bidding starts of $9450 for the 35cm and $65,000 for a croc version. Ouch & ouch! I do give props to the marketing geniuses at Hermes! .....but I digress back to Mulberry. Hmmm, maybe the leather one?

or Ralph Lauren's Ricky bag? http://www.ralphlauren.com/ at $3,495. Well, if you are an exhibitionist and don't mind a few looky-loos checking our your goods, the clear Ricky bag is on sale for $929. Who is nutty enough to drop that type of cash for plastic?

I'd love to buy any one of these but I am too responsible for my own good, well that is, until my next commission check.

Hug Your Tree & Go Green

Going vegan with fashion is tough and certain sacrifices must be made (macrame purses anyone?) if you're going to contribute to saving the environment. I had a conversation with my friend I'll call "the enabler" and her desire to be "politically correct" after a recent splurge on a LV Speedy Monogramflamouge during a summer trip to Vegas, she felt the need to tip the scales back in her favor with mother nature and mentioned this beautiful line of handbags by Matt & Nat.

Matt & Nat started almost 20 years ago with the concept to forego animal products and be fashion foward. In Spring 08, the company recycled plastic bottles into an entire line of nylon, following up with Fall 08 with a felt line made from the same material. "The Enabler" & "Miss G" have recently picked up totes from this company and absolutely adore them. The "Camden" (left) is $265.
If you are more of a satchel kind of girl, the "Fifty-Five" (above right) can be had for $250. To my surprise, this company read my mind and have included a line of travel & laptop bags....my quest for the perfect laptop bag continues. The "Jobs"(L) at $285 has faux grey suede lining, pockets for your lipglosses and girl gadgets. Small price for a little luxury! Buy from Nordstroms or directly from their site. Now the question of the day, go YSL or green? http://www.mattandnat.com/product/search/collection/4
The idea of going green for footwear outside of wearing flip-flops ia more difficult for me to conceptualize. The challenge is to find eco-friendly footwear that allow your feet to breathe (I associate man made soles with stinky feet) and still be cute to strut around in. http://www.alternativeoutfitters.com/

And....the most famous vegan designer of them all, Stella McCartney. I think these wedges are incredibly sexy. I don't think these are made with non-animal products BUT they are made with sustainable wood- you gotta give the girl a B+ for trying. $1195 at http://www.stellamccartney.com/.

I love this concept but at 5'3" (ok, I'm lying about my height but that is what the DMV has me down for. No one knows my true height b/c you'll never see me out of heels), my legs are too stubby to wear these boots. $1,995 by the lovely Stella McCartney.
My dear friend, "Pixie Girl" has suggested pairing this turtleneck dress from American Apparel with the boots. Solid rib turtleneck for $32 is a bargain.

Ok, A slight deviation from purses and shoes....Pixie Girl loves the style of Kate Moss and I've included this site just for her. She & Kate are gifted with this special innate gene to combine clothing that are edgy, girly, rock inspired and sexy...always managing to be a "do" & will never appear with a black bar over their eyes in Glamour's "Don'ts" style page. Enter http://www.topshop.com/ for their $750 shopping spree.

Sex and the City (SATC) released today

Hi Girls,

SATC comes out today! If you haven't seen the movie, then hustle you tush over to these places to get the movie that came out during Spring 2008. Prices are all over the board but you can buy them inside Circuit city over the next 2 days for $13.95 or online:http://entertainment.circuitcity.com/Movies/Movie.aspx?prodid=NEWL1000040426DVD&Store=1288

Walmart- Sorry, their site was closed for maintenance

Target: Wouldn't let me buy it online at 1:00am

Here are some of Carrie's favs throughout the movie. Patricia Fields (the stylist) may look and be very quirky in life but her fashion sense & style has inspired the "Carrie" in all of us.

The studded belt she donned on throughout many of the scenes were originally vintage (Goodwill anyone?) but if you absolutely must have them....
http://www.patriciafield.com/carriesstuddedbeltfromsexandthecity.aspx

I bought thes but will be returning them soon (sigh), so I get to admire and sniff them in its box for a few more days before I return them to Neimans. If any of you are a size 37 (7) and want to shell out $780 + tax, I will part ways with these sandals and will promise only to shed a couple of tears.

Extreme Gladiator Dior Sandals

Some gorgeous alternatives:

Steve Maddens' Madalyn for $109.95, Aldo's Luedi for $90.00, or Bakers Candice for $69.95

Sadly, there are no purses to covet from SATC. The LV Firebird handbag is a bit too much and I couldn't bring myself to carry around the Eiffel tower handbag in public....
